Covenant of Expectations

COMMUNITY COVENANT

Residents of Wesley are expected to participate in community living and abide by the community covenant as outlined below. The intent of this covenantal living is to create an atmosphere of mutual support and accountability so that residents may live in an environment that is both safe and enjoyable. Wesley Foundation Housing cultivates a Christian atmosphere in which students may deal with the spiritual, intellectual and social challenges of college life. Programs are intended to create a sense of community and provide a forum in which students may wrestle with difficult issues and find support during challenging times. We are a diverse community committed to learning, sharing, and serving. Residents need to be open-minded and respectful of other people and their property.

1) Residents are expected to be active members of the community and full participants in Wesley programs. Living in community is an integral part of Wesley. Ministry and service both within and outside of Wesley to the broader University campus is equally important. It is absolutely crucial that Wesley residents want to experience community life and servant ministry to others.

2) Residents are expected to be active participants in Wesley service/outreach/mission projects to the community.

3) Residents will attend a required community meeting each month to discuss community problems, share concerns, and get to know each other. For excused absences, residents must secure written permission of the director in advance.

4) No use of tobacco of any kind is permitted inside the buildings. This includes smoking, dipping, chewing and spitting.

5) Overnight guests are permitted provided that you have obtained permission from your roommate AND an RA. Only same sex visitors are permitted overnight. No sexual activity is allowed on the premises or at Wesley events.

6) Absolutely no use or possession of alcohol, drugs, firearms, fireworks, weapons or paint guns permitted on Wesley property or at Wesley events. All residents can be subject to drug testing at the discretion of the Director.

7) Quiet hours are established each semester by the residents and are strictly enforced. Visitors of the opposite sex are allowed during times established by the Wesley student community and Director at the Fall Retreat.

8) Residents are responsible for cleaning, sweeping, and mopping their own rooms. Any unsealed or open food of any kind must be disposed of in the lobby trash and NOT in the room. Rooms may be inspected at the RA's discretion. Upon checkout, residents must clean their room thoroughly for a deposit refund. Details for cleaning will be provided by the R.A.

9) Residents will spend a minimum of l.5 hours per week to help with Wesley Community cleaning, which may include sweeping, mopping, mowing, yard work, dusting, setting up for programs, dishwashing, or other Wesley community needs. Each resident will have a specific weekly assignment.

10) Fall residents will attend an orientation retreat Labor Day weekend. The cost is $100 for food, lodging, transportation and program material. ALL FALL RESIDENTS MUST ATTEND THIS RETREAT. It will be held away from Wesley, usually at the beach or mountains. Some need-based scholarships for the retreat are available upon request.

11) Agents of the Wesley Foundation, including the Director, RA's and approved maintenance persons may enter any dorm room for the purpose of maintenance, inspection or emergency. Advance notice will be given whenever possible.

12) Students may arrange and decorate their room as they wish with some restrictions. Restrictions include no painting, dismantling the furniture, nails in the wall or tape on walls. Residents may not display inappropriate symbols or posters of any kind. Inappropriateness is at the sole discretion of the director.

13) There is a $150 fine for wrongfully pulling the fire alarm or wrongfully using fire extinguishers. This is a criminal offense in Alabama. The authorities will be contacted.

14) There is a minimum $75 fine for losing a room key. (We would have to rekey the locks in the room and lobby.)

15) Cooking is allowed only in the main kitchen.

16) No pets allowed.

DISICIPLINARY ACTION

Residents are expected and required to abide by the community covenant and financial agreement. Resident Advisors (RA's) are students who serve as dorm leaders. Their responsibilities include supporting residents, enforcing established policy, coordinating clean-up schedules, and dealing with day to day problems. Generally students are given one verbal warning by the RA's before a complaint is written up for the director. No verbal warning is given for use or possession of alcohol, drugs, physical fighting or firearms. Once a complaint is written up for the director, it becomes a part of the student's file and further disciplinary action is taken.

Failure to comply with any part of the community covenant or financial agreement will result in one or more of the following actions at the discretion of the Director: 1) Warning; 2) Extra work cleaning; 3) A monetary fine; 4) Probation; 5) Being asked to leave with no return of that semester's fee.

If a student is not able to live in the Wesley Community and abide by established rules, he/she will be asked to leave, and will forfeit the remainder semester fee.
